Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

Mission Statement

R Y L A  – “ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS” is a program designed to shape leadership skills in students who already possess and demonstrate outstanding leadership characteristics in their high school and community.  RYLA Camp is a youth retreat with the main objective being to expose students to the many phases of leadership by learning from individuals who are already leaders in their community and businesses.  Students attending the RYLA camp should leave the seminar with a better understanding of how to assume a positive leadership role in their school and community.  

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program are: 

  1. To further demonstrate Rotary’s respect and concerns for youth.
  2. To encourage and assist selected youth leaders and potential leaders in methods of responsible and effective voluntary youth leadership by providing them with a training experience.
  3. To encourage continued and stronger leadership of youth by youth.
  4. To publicly recognize the high qualities of many young people who are rendering service to their communities as youth leaders.

 PARTICIPANT SELECTION CRITERIA

 REQUIRED SELECTION CRITERIA:
 High School Students ages 14-17
 MUST have potential or established leadership skills

OTHER SELECTION CRITERIA:
Participants should have:
 Superior citizenship qualities
 Quality and/or significance of participant’s extra curricular activities
 Academic Honors or Awards
 Current and Recent Student Leadership Positions
 Work Experience
 High moral character
 Cooperative and willing to participate as a member of a group
 Informed about current events

Location:

RYLA 2013 will be held Thursday through Sunday, February 14-17, 2013, at the Methodist Agogic Centre, Emancipation Ln. # 9, St. John's Estate, St. Maarten, Dutch Caribbean. Sessions might be held at the University of St. Martin.  

What you can expect:

  • Fun and challenging leadership skill-building activities
  • Interaction with local leaders who will lead sessions and demonstrate leadership skills
  • Meeting over 120 persons from the District
  • New insights, friends, and leadership skills that will impact the rest of your life  

What To Bring to RYLA

Please bring the following:
 Sleeping sheets, blanket
 Pillow
 Toiletries – toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc.
 Shower shoes (if desired)
 Bath and hand towels
 Comfortable clothes -- Jeans and T-shirts recommended
 NO INAPPROPRIATE DESIGNS OR SLOGANS ALLOWED
 Sneakers or comfortable shoes.
 Personal medication (must be clearly marked)
 Personal hygiene items
 Radios, Walkmans, Ipods, etc., are allowed only in evenings in the cabins after all programming is concluded. Use at any other time may result on those items being confiscated for the duration of the camp. Note: The RYLA Organizing committee or any associates will not be held liable for damages or loss of any of the abovementioned items.

The following items are NOT allowed and may be confiscated for the duration of the camp.
 NO TOBACCO PRODUCTS
 NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
 NO ELECTRONIC GAMES

Emergency personnel will be at the camp all weekend
